With the arrival of the revived Ford Shelby GT500, and soon the Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet designed the Camaro concept to compete in the upcoming retro pony car race of the 21st century.

The 2006 concept Camaro shown at the Detroit Auto Show draws strongly on the Camaro's of the 1960's, themselves American motoring icons. The powerful rear arches of the Camaro concept emphasise the rear wheel drive layout and also help cover the enormous 22" rear wheels.

Powered by a thoroughly modern, 400 horsepower, 6 litre LS2 V8, mated to a six speed manual gearbox and featuring fully independent suspension the Camaro concept is far more advanced than its predecessors. But like its forebears, the new Camaro is intended as a performance car which is practical enough for everyday use. Part of its practicality comes from its fuel efficient engine which deactivates 4 of the 8 cylinders when the vehicle is cruising, and full power is not needed.

The Camaro Concept is being used by GM to gauge public opinion and see if there is room for another muscle car in the American market. Almost certainly there is. And public opinion of the design seems mostly favorable, so if GM wanted to the Camaro could be back in production by 2009.
