The Dodge Challenger concept shown at the 2006 Detroit
Auto Show is another retro concept which draws its styling
cues directly form the original 1970's car.
One of the most eagerly anticipated concepts of 2006,
especially for American muscle car fans, the Challenger
concept is powered by a 6.1 liter HEMI V8 mated to a manual
6 speed transmission. This 425 horsepower unit is capable
of taking the Challenger to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds,
and on to an impressive top speed of 174 mph. likely limited
on a production model.
The designers of the new Challenger have tried to follow
the design of the original car, while also bringing the
design thoroughly into the 21st century. The overall shape
is very similar to the original, but a proportionally
smaller glass house compared to the overall body follows
inline with recent Dodge products, while also increasing
the cars purposeful stance.
The interior also pays homage to the original Challenger.
The sports seats use pleated style lines like the original
but also feature far greater lateral support for aggressive
driving. The 'pistol grip' shifter is also a direct link
to the old car, and the instrument cluster, inspired by
the view down an engine block, recalls the HEMI spirit.
If Dodge were to introduce the the Challenger into its
line-up, which looks possible, then it should begin appearing
in showrooms 2009, 35 years after the original was dropped.
